Blog 7- Analyse two title sequences

2) The Stepfather

This title sequence was extremely interesting to watch. This title sequence starts with the narrative of the film. In comparison to Black Swan, the first title in the Stepfather was the name of the film. We are first shown a house and wide shot has been used to establish the location. We are then shown a set of sharp equipment which is shown in a neat, ordered line. It seems the character is a very obsessive person with a dark shade. We are shown a man shaving his beard and cuts his skin of my mistake and applies a plaster. In the background there seems to be some sinister music playing and makes the man seem quite mysteriously dark. There are close ups of  normal family pictures on the wall and inside photo frames, at this moment it seems like this is a house of a normal and happy family. The man turns on some music which ends up being the Christmas carol 'Silent Night' and makes himself breakfast. Although Christmas carols are associated with happiness and celebration however this has been deliberately used and is called contrapuntal sound. This is when the nice happy images don't match with the sound and this creates a more creepy sound. We are then shocked to see the family scattered along the floors of the house. This man must have killed them. The image of this nice and normal family we had thought of, is shockingly something else. The man smirks and leaves with no regret or sadness on his face. This intrigues the audience to find out why and how the family were killed. This short sequence hooks the audience and personally it definitely hooked me in to the film.
