task 6

What makes a good title sequence? Blog task 6

Watch the short interview with Kyle Cooper and complete the questions below:

Kyle Cooper is accredited with what?

Single handedly revived the idea of the title sequences as an art form. The title sequence ‘Seven’ was held by New York magazine as one of the most important design innovations of the 1990s.  He’s worked on over 100 title sequences and some of the most famous ones are ‘Dawn of the Dead’,  ‘Seven’ and ‘Spider-Man’ movies.

What does he think makes a good title sequence?

1.      The fact it blends seamlessly in to the film it self
2.      2. A great title sequence sets an expectation of the film and a high standard on what’s to come

What is important about the font used in the film Seven?

1.      The hand written font was made to depict the person whose hand it was as a crazy serial  killer keeping track of his killings, what the police are doing to catch him and planning tactics for his next victims.
2.      It adds to the overall tone to the film and make it fit in to the overall feeling of the film

What reasons does he give for liking the following title sequences?

Deadzone
To Kill a Mocking Bird
1.The music lasted for a long time and gave the opening a mysterious atmosphere

2.simple typography
1. The camera wasn’t on a Z axis

3.      The camera didn’t follow the object – the marble- around when it was moving.

3. The opening stuck with the overall theme of the film

4. the typography was integrated

What does he mean by “story based” main title sequences?

1. He means this is like a poster for the movie
2. it is like the back story to the movie, a metaphor for the film

What problems might a studio face after an audience test screening?

1.      They might not like some of the scenes in the film meaning that part would have to be reshot which they might not have enough money for.
2.      The audience might not understand the ideas the film are trying to show meaning they might not like it as much as the production though

Why do the 2 ½ minutes of the title sequence become important for the studio?

1.      The title sequence sets up the overall atmosphere of the film and gives the audience a taster of what is to come.
2.      It makes the viewer question what is going to happen in the film they would then watch it to get the answer.
3.      They tell the back story and help the movie and production to get the audience to understand more on the movies and begin to ask questions and get more involved in the film

What do the title sequences to Dawn of the Dead try to do?

1.  The sequence was very choppy cutting from calm interview rooms having discussions to chaos outside with zombies, blood and killing. This showed the contrast between how things had been and what was changing. The fonts changed between smooth when they were over the calm scenes and jagged when they were over the destruction scenes
2. Stuck to the main theme and set the story from the title sequence really manipulating the title sequence to show what had happened before the story shown in the film. So the audience would know why the events in the film were happening.

Why does Cooper think titles are so important to a film?

It is important as they set the tone and atmosphere and help get the back story of the film across to the audience so they can clearly understand and begin to ask questions about the film from the start making they more engaged and want to continue watching.
